The 2022 Asian Games will be historical
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced a partnership on Monday with Alisports the sports subsidiary of Chinese online retail giant Alibaba. The partnership was made for eSports to be demonstrated at the 2018 Asia Games in Indonesia, with complete inclusion in the official event program and medals will be issued at the 2022 Asia Games in Hangzhou.
Alibaba’s interest in the eSports market is not new the company invested $150 million (R1,9 billion) in the International e-Sports Federation last year and organised a worldwide tournament featuring a prize pool of more than $5.5 million (R 75 million).
The OCA said the decision reflects “the rapid development and popularity of this new form of sports participation among the youth.”
